Today, the spotlight is on Amber Magaw. She’s a Senior Hygienist at DentalWorks South Plaza in Akron, Ohio. She joined the DentalOne family two years ago and has been an RDH for 10 years. Let’s dive into her Q. & A.!
Q: What made you decide to become a Hygienist?
A: I wanted to provide and promote quality oral health care and build trusting relationships with my patients.
Q: Why did you choose to become part of the DentalOne family?
A: I believe DentalOne goes above and beyond in giving us the tools to be able to build good relationships with patients. It also strives to build strong relationships with us as supported clinicians.
Q: If a Hygienist was considering joining a DentalOne supported practice, what would you tell him or her about personal development within the company?
A: DentalOne is a great company to be supported by, because it cares and listens to its team members and supported clinicians. The company is continuing to grow, and it would be a great opportunity to be a part of that.
Q: What types of training and continued education does DentalOne offer you?
A: DentalOne offers continued education courses at no cost, which is very helpful. It also stays up to date in the latest technology and provides additional classes and training, so supported clinicians can utilize them to provide quality care.
Q: What are the benefits of being supported by DentalOne versus working in a private practice?
A: It is nice to have a company that supports and respects us as clinicians. Also, each office is run very differently based on patients’ needs, but it’s nice to see that even though the practices are different, they communicate and help each other out as much as possible. Whether it is borrowing supplies, asking questions about insurance or even utilizing providers when needed, team members across different practices are always there to lend a helping hand. It is a good support system to have.
Q: What opportunities does DentalOne provide you with to grow not just your medical skill set but also your leadership abilities?
A: I have improved as a provider, because I am able to utilize the newest technology when treating patients. It’s nice to be supported by a company that provides us training and education. I was also selected to become a Senior Hygienist for my market in the East Region. This has helped me grow as a leader. I am able to talk to other providers and give them ideas and recommendations on how to provide quality care.
Q: How does having access to all of the latest products and technology impact the level of quality patient care you provide?
A: Having access to the newest technology is vital when trying to provide patients the highest level of quality care. It is great to be supported by a company that actively provides the equipment for us to do so.

Q: What’s your hidden talent?
A: I like to find a common interest with each and every patient. I talk to my patients about their lives and what’s going on around them. I have seen a big improvement in treatment acceptance by doing this. Patients are more willing to accept treatment when they can trust you and feel that you are looking out for their best interest.
Q: Given a chance, who would you be for a day and why?
A: I would be a stay-at-home mom, so I could spend more time with my kids.
Q: Are you a spring, summer, fall or winter person and why?
A: Summer, summer, summer. I love the heat and the sun. It makes me question why I have never left Ohio, because it is cold half of the year here.
Q: If you could time travel, would you go to the past or to the future?
A: I would travel to the past to try to prevent all of the catastrophic events that have occurred: Titanic crashing, wars, 9/11 attack, etc.
Q: What’s one thing about you that surprises people?
A: I am a huge sports fan. I love college and professional football the most. I am a huge Ohio State fan.
